VOLUNTEERS
Without our volunteers there would be no Moray RDA. Anyone over the age of 12 can volunteer for RDA. No experience is needed, either with horses or with children and adults with individual needs. All training is given so no need to hesitate. As well as working with the ponies and participants, we also need volunteers to help with our fundraising so this may be an alternative area.
RDA brings benefits to us volunteers as well. In the words of one of our volunteers ‘Every week I leave for home at the end of the day with a real feeling of fulfilment and well-being having had a very rewarding day.’ The biggest reward for RDA volunteers is the smiles of our riders!
We really appreciate the work of our volunteers.
Why volunteer? Tracy’s story
As a relatively new volunteer, I have enjoyed the social aspect of meeting and working alongside other volunteers, supporting the riders as they navigate various courses laid out by the coaches. Sometimes I have the lead rein and I am in control of the pony. Sometimes I am a side helper, relaying encouragement, and instruction to the rider. Occasionally, I scoop up the horse’s poo! Seeing the progress riders make from week to week makes it all worthwhile, gaining confidence and ability. It’s recognised that regular riding has many physical benefits, including improved balance, increased core strength, co-ordination, as well as improving concentration and communication. The smiles at the end of the ride are worth their weight in gold. As you can see from my photo I also enjoy helping with fundraising. This was at one of our RDA cake sale days.
